Stories of the Pious: Hazrat Musa (as) (contd..)

It was decided as "Mehr" that Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) would tend the cattle on the Mount of Tur for 8 years. When this period lapsed, Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) decided to return to his native place in Egypt along with his wife so that he could meet his mother and sister.

On the way towards Egypt, Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) sensed that he was on the wrong path. It was the dead of night, the wind was blowing strongly, and it was very chilly. The conditions were very difficult and Hazrat Moosa’s (a.s.) wife in particular could not bear that severe cold. Suddenly Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) saw some light at a distance, which seemed like a fire. He told his wife that he was going towards the fire in the hope of finding the way and would also bring some fire to get some relief from the bitter cold.

When Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) approached the light he witnessed a green and brilliant tree. There was a fire raging from the top of the tree till the bottom. Amazingly, neither was the fire burning the tree, nor in any way affecting its greenery. Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) become frightened and fell unconscious. When he regained consciousness, Allah strengthened his heart and he heard a voice:

Surely I am your Lord, therefore put off your shoes; surely you are in the sacred valley, Tuwa,

(Surah Taha : Ayat 12)

This was for the fist time that Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) conversed with Allah. Then Allah declared, ‘O Moosa, I have appointed you for messengership.

Again a voice exclaimed, ‘O Moosa! What is in your hand.’ Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) replied, ‘This is my stick with which I support myself and collect leaves for my goat. Allah commanded, ‘Release it on the ground!’ Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) did as he was told and was shocked to see it transform into a snake and start crawling. He was alarmed. But Allah reassured him and told him to catch it once again and it would return to its previous condition. Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) lifted the snake and it turned into a stick. In this way, Allah granted the first miracle to Hazrat Moosa (a.s.). Immediately after that Allah bestowed the second miracle on Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) when He told him:

And press your hand to your side, it shall come out white without evil: another sign.

(Surah Taha : 22)

Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) placed his hand under his armpit and when he removed it, it was shining brilliantly. When he placed it once again under his armpit and removed it, it turned normal. Allah declared: I have granted these two miracles to you, so go to Firaun and invite him towards Me. Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) asked: How should I go towards Firaun? I am a murderer in his eye, I am afraid that Firaun will kill me. Allow my brother Haroon, who is more eloquent to accompany me. Allah accepted his request and allowed Janabe Haroon (a.s.) to go along with Hazrat Moosa (a.s.). For more details about this incident refer to Sura-e-Taha

Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) in Firaon’s court
On reaching Egypt, Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) met his mother, brother and sister and informed his brother Haroon about Allah’s message. On reaching Firaun’s court Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) declared,

"O Firaun!, verily I am the messenger of Allah and it is obligatory on me that I speak only the truth in whatever I speak from Allah. I have brought a sign from your Lord. Let the Bani Israel come with me."
Firaun looked at Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) scornfully and said : Who is your Lord? Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) replied: My Lord is He who created His creation in a proper and suitable form and guided them. Firaun then started reminding him of his favours and bestowals. He made Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) recall how he had raised him while he was still an infant. Finally he warned, ‘Remember that if you accept somebody as God other than me, then I will imprison you.’

But this had no effect on Hazrat Moosa (a.s.). When Firaun witnessed this he demanded: What is the proof of your truthfulness? Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) threw his stick on the ground, which transformed into a serpent. On seeing this Firaun was dumbfounded and demanded another miracle. Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) kept his hand in his armpit and it was shining when he removed it. Now Firaun had no alternative other than to accept Hazrat Moosa’s (a.s.) claim as the Messenger of Allah. But Firaun was obsessed with his status and power and refused to accept him as Allah’s messenger and branded him a magician.

Surely acquisition of status and position is such a thing that after knowing the reality also, man does not accept it.

Even after clear proofs and miracles, Firaun persisted in his obstinacy and did not accept Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) as Allah’s messenger. At last he was afflicted by Allah’s chastisement and drowned in the river Nile. For more details refer Sura-e-A’raaf.

Demise of Hazrat Moosa (.a.s) and Haroon (a.s.)

When the term of Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) and Hazrat Haroon’s (a.s.) propagation came to an end, Allah ordered them to go on Mount Tur. Hazrat Haroon (a.s.) expired there. Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) buried him there and returned to his nation. But the people of Bani Israel accused Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) of killing Hazrat Haroon (a.s.). Allah showed them the corpse of Hazrat Haroon (a.s.) lying peacefully on a wooden bed between the sky and the earth. On witnessing this, the Bani Israel were satisfied that the death of Hazrat Haroon (a.s.) was a natural death.

Just few days had passed when Hazrat Moosa (a.s.) by Allah’s order reached mount "Bunoo" and from there he glanced at Palestine and Baitul Muqaddas. At that very moment his soul was captured by the Angel of Death and he was buried there. Hazrat Yusha bin Nun (a.s.) became the successor of Hazrat Moosa (a.s.).

We are quoting some points for the readers :
Qaroon lived at the time of Hazrat Moosa (a.s.). Initially he was a good person, but after acquiring wealth he started disobeying Allah and insulted H. Moosa (a.s.). Therefore he sank in the earth along with his wealth on the command of Allah. Those who were envious of Qaroon’s wealth started repenting. The people of Bani Israeel due to their disobedience were afflicted with different chastisements like

  1. Allah sent a storm, which destroyed their houses, and they had to go into the jungles.
  2. Then came the locusts, which destroyed their field and gardens.
  3. Then came the punishment of lice. There were lice all over the body, so much so that even a tiny place was not seen where lice was not there.
  4. Chastisement of frogs : Frogs came out of their nose and ears and fell in their foods.
  5. The water of River Nile changed to blood. This blood was water for the Bani Israeel. So the people of Firaun (Qibti) told the people of Moosa (Sabti) that put water in our mouth by your mouth but when this water would come in the mouth of the people of Firaun it would again turn into blood.
  6. Many people died by the chastisement of snow.

For 40 years the Bani Israeel were involved in such types of punishments. Then Allah sent plague and at midnight the eldest son of every person died. Every Egyptian house was in mourning.

(The details about the punishment is described in Surah Aaraaf : 133)
